Shakira was surrendered to Cindy's Promise with what is known as a keratoma - which is essentially a benign tumour inside her hoof. This keratoma had resulted in infection around the pedal bone. On X-ray, it had also revealed that she had some pedal bone rotation (laminitis). Shakira underwent a difficult surgery to remove the keratoma and treat infection. She needed months of stable confinement, strict nutrition and lots of nursing care. The intensive treatment consisted of daily flushing, soaking, medicating and bandaging of the surgical site and lots of specialist farrier care.
At the 12 month mark Shakira's hoof had almost grown back to normal and she was sound and happy.
She went off to an amazing home where she is spoilt and won "CHAMPION" at her first ever show!
